School ITT Engagement

Would your school like to get involved with hosting ITT trainees and activities?

Hosting ITT placements and activities in your school has many benefits for your school and supports teacher recruitment and retention in our region. ITT is intended to support and benefit everyone involved; schools, trainees, experienced teachers/leaders and pupils.

If you are interested in engaging with ITT by hosting a placement or increasing your current level of engagement, we'd love to hear from you. We can talk you through the ITT process and connect you with our network of local ITT providers in Calderdale and Kirklees.

What will hosting an ITT placement in our school involve?

As part of their ITT course, every trainee teacher must get experience teaching in at least two schools and receive clear and consistent mentoring during each placement. Trainees are assessed against the Teachers' Standards at the end of their course and therefore need a variety of experience in schools to enable them to meet all of these standards.

By hosting an ITT placement, your school will provide trainee teachers with:

  • Teaching experience in a classroom.
  • Support from a trained mentor, including weekly mentor meetings.
  • Opportunities to shadow and learn from experienced teachers.
  • Feedback, advice and reflection.
  • A nurturing environment in which to learn, grow and develop their own teaching style.

How will hosting an ITT placement specifically benefit our school?

Hosting an ITT placement in your school will provide you with the following opportunities:

  • Recruitment and retetion - you will have the opportunity to work with talented trainee teachers who may be a strong fit for any future teaching vacancies in your school.
  • Professional development - experienced teachers and leaders will gain valuable DPS opportunities through mentoring  and supporting trainees.
  • Access to the latest research, practice and innovation on teaching and support for children and young people.
  • Receive support from ITT providers and their wider networks.

What is Intensive Training and Practice?

Another way that schools can engage with ITT is through hosting Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP).

ITaP intensely focuses on analysing evidence of pivotal elements of teaching - for example, behaviour management - putting these elements into practice immediately and receiving immediate feedback on this practice.

Some of these elements take place in the ITT institution or virtually, but some need to take place in a school environment, such as live classroom practice. Therefore, schools may offer to host these elements alternatively to or in addition to an ITT placement.
