ITT Information for Schools: Get Involved with ITT

By engaging with ITT, your school and staff play a vital role in developing and supporting the next generation of teachers to the profession.

What will hosting an ITT placement involve?

As part of their ITT course, every trainee teacher must get experience teaching in at least two schools and receive clear and consistent mentoring during each placement. Trainees are assessed against the Teachers' Standards at the end of their course and therefore need a variety of experience in schools to enable them to meet all of these standards.

By hosting an ITT placement, your school will provide trainee teachers with:

  • Teaching experience in a classroom.
  • Support from a trained mentor, including weekly mentor meetings.
  • Opportunities to shadow and learn from experienced teachers.
  • Feedback, advice and reflection.
  • A nurturing environment in which to learn, grow and develop their own teaching style.

How will ITT engagement benefit your school?

ITT is intended to support and benefit everyone involved. Benefits include:

ITT can support schools and staff in many ways:

Further information can be found in the DfE ITT Reforms Information for Schools slide deck here.

How else can schools support ITT?

Another way that schools can get involved with ITT is through Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP).

ITaP is a new element that must be incorporated into all ITT courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from September 2024. ITaP will intensely focus on analysing evidence of pivotal elements of teaching, for example behaviour management, putting these elements into practice immediately and receiving immediate feedback on this practice.

Some of these elements take place in the ITT institution or virtually, but some need to take place in a school environment, such as live classroom practice. Therefore, schools may offer to host these elements alternatively to or in addition to an ITT placement.

For more information about ITaP, please see the DfE ITT Reforms Information for Schools slide deck above.

How can we help your school engage with ITT?

If you are interested in engaging with ITT by hosting a placement or increasing your current level of engagement, we'd love to hear from you. We can talk you through the ITT process and connect you with our network of local ITT providers in Calderdale and Kirklees.

We have supported a number of schools within the region. Click to download our case study below which provides an insight into the support we have provided and how other schools have engaged with ITT.
