Train to Teach

Katy Isles, ITT Programme Lead at Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub, introduces you to our initial teacher training (ITT) programme.

"Our ITT programme is very interactive and engaging. It is school-based, placing you in school from the beginning and eases you into teaching at an appropriate pace. You will be fully immersed in school life and take ownership of the classes in your two contrasting experience school placements. You will get to work with outstanding mentors and expert professionals, and our 60+ partner schools offer excellent local placements.

We are dedicated to supporting our trainees to become the best teacher possible and are proud of the mentoring and support the we provide.

Places on our programme are subject to entry requirements and involve a fee. However, there are many options and funding routes available which we are happy to talk you through.

Our programme is very successful; 98% of trainees secure teaching roles after completing the programme, with a large proportion of our partner schools (including those with SHARE Multi-Academy Trust) making offers of employment to ther placement trainees. This is great for our local schools, supporting education and teacher recruitment and retention in our region.

Whether you are a recent graduate, already working in a supporting role in education or looking for a career change, we are here to help you start your teaching journey".

Training With Us: A Trainee's Perspective

Sam Jennings: Teacher of History, SHARE Multi-Academy Trust

"My initial teacher training began with Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub in September 2022 and I achieved my PGCE and QTS in June 2023.

During my training, I completed placements at three secondary schools within SHARE Multi-Academy Trust. My first placement was at Thornhill Community Academy where the Humanities department were very supportive and I was able to develop positive relationships with both staff and students, making my first placement valuable and enjoyable.

In my second placement at Shelley College, I gain valuable experience of planning and teaching A-Level History. This was a fantastic opportunity to develop my love and passion for the subject. I began my third and final placement at Royds Hall where I now work as a qualified teacher. I am continuing to develop my early career and practice, recently joining the Teaching and Learning team, working with lead practitioners to implement learning strategies and give examples of best practice for all staff briefings and CPD. It is a fantastic opportunity to develop my practice.

I am very thankful to Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub and SHARE Multi-Academy Trust for their support during my initial teacher training and my early teaching career, their network of expertise and willingness to provide the right training opportunities for me."

Bryonny Wrighton: Teacher of English/Induction Tutor, SHARE Multi-Academy Trust

"From my very early days at secondary school, I knew I had a passion for teaching. That passion led me from the classroom to training to become a teacher through the Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub.

Since completing my training, my career has really progressed and I am now a member of the senior leadership team at Thornhill Community Academy, the school I was placed at to complete my training!

I absolutely loved my training and the ITT team at the Hub were very helpful and supportive. I was able to grow with confidence and purpose. The programme shaped me into the teacher and leader I am today. Being able to give back to the school that gave me so much in my early days is an incredible privilege.

In addition to my leadership role, I am supporting the Hub with facilitating training for early career teachers and providing mentorship to others. Now it is my turn to support the next generation of educators! Seeing them thrive is both inspiring and deeply rewarding, and it all started with the Hub's ITT programme!"

Colt May: Primary Teacher, SHARE Multi-Academy Trust

"The support that I received during my training with Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub, and continue to receive from SHARE Multi-Academy Trust, is superb.

They truly do live by their core value of 'valuing people, supporting personal best'. They have supported and pushed me to give my best so that I can support our children in achieving their best, irrespective of their background."
