Appropriate Body Service
Appropriate bodies support the schools and teachers they work with in a variety of ways and their core functions are central to ensuring that schools provide adequate support to teachers at the start of their teaching career. Appropriate bodies have two key roles which will be described in this guidance:
• Monitoring of support – appropriate bodies will
-
check that early career teachers are receiving their statutory entitlements, and that regard is had to the statutory guidance.
-
provide ECF fidelity checks, ensuring schools are supported to provide ECTs with an ECF-based induction.
• Monitoring of assessment – appropriate bodies will make the final decision as to whether the ECT has satisfactorily met the Teachers’ Standards, based on the headteacher’s recommendation.
Independent quality assurance of statutory induction, through the role of the appropriate body, is important for ensuring that schools provide adequate support for their ECTs, and that regard is had to the statutory guidance.
ECT Manager: this is the online portal we use for managing the assessment of ECT induction.
ECTs should be registered on ECT Manager as soon as they begin their position in your school. You can set up a School Administrator (such as school business manager or HR colleague) to handle ECT registration. Administrators have no access to progress review or assessment information.
At the end of each term of induction, the tutor should meet with the ECT to discuss their progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards. The tutor then writes a progress review (brief summary) or an assessment (against each standard) to capture this progress. The reports need to be digitally signed by the ECT, the tutor and the head teacher before they can be submitted through the portal to the Appropriate Body. Reports are then reviewed and commented upon by the Appropriate Body.
The Appropriate Body can provide additional support to ECTs who are struggling and not on track. Please contact us to discuss how we might be able to help. You can raise an alert on ECT Manager or contact the hub directly.
We can also support ECTs and tutors who feel that they are not receiving heir statutory entitlements. You can contact us directly at the Hub or through ECT Manager.
