Welcome to Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub. We are the designated teaching school hub for Calderdale and Kirklees, working and connecting with the region’s teachers and leaders to provide them with professional development for all stages of their career. Based at Shelley College in Huddersfield, we are part of SHARE Multi-Academy Trust which operates four primary and four secondary schools in West Yorkshire. We recruit and train new teachers to the profession through our outstanding Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme, which you’ll learn more about in this prospectus. Once trained and successfully awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you become an Early Career Teacher (ECT). We provide support, guidance and training to ECTs through our delivery of the Early Career Framework (ECF), which spans a two-year induction. Additionally, our Appropriate Body (AB) service ensures that all ECTs receive their statutory entitlements. Experienced teachers and leaders can develop their career further through our suite of Specialist and Leadership National Professional Qualifications (NPQs). We are proud to support teachers and leaders in all phases of schools in the region. We look forward to working with you. Our Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme is run in partnership with Trinity Institute of Education and Yorkshire Rose Teaching Partnership through our lead provider, National Institute of Teaching (NIoT). With around 60 partner schools, our collaboration means we can offer both expertise and experience. Whether you are a recent graduate, already work in a supporting role in education, or looking for a career change, our programme will help you start your teaching journey. We offer different phase and subject options as well as learning on a full or parttime basis. Our programme (full-time) takes one academic year to complete. Our learning is very interactive and engaging. It is school-based, placing trainees in school from day one and easing them into teaching at an appropriate pace. You will be fully immersed in school life and take ownership of the classes in your two contrasting experience placement schools. You will get to work with outstanding mentors and expert professionals, and our partner schools offer excellent local placements. We are dedicated to supporting trainees to become the best teacher possible and are proud of the mentoring and support we offer trainees. Places on the programme are subject to entry requirements and involve a fee. However, there are many options and funding routes available which we are happy to explain. Our programme is very successful; 98% of trainees secure teaching roles after completion, with a large proportion of our partner schools (including those within SHARE Multi-Academy Trust) making offers of employment. This is great for local schools, supporting education and teacher recruitment and retention in our region. We look forward to helping you start your teaching career. From my very early days at secondary school, I knew I had a passion for teaching. That passion led me from the classroom to training to become a teacher through the Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub. Since completing my training, my career has really progressed and I am now a member of the senior leadership team at Thornhill Community Academy, the school I was placed at to complete my teacher training! I absolutely loved my training and the ITT team were very helpful and supportive. I was able to grow with confidence and purpose. The programme shaped me into the teacher and leader I am today. Being able to give back to the school that gave me so much in my early days is an incredible privilege. In addition to my leadership role, I am supporting the Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub with facilitating training for early career teachers and providing mentorship to others. Now it is my turn to support the next generation of educators! Seeing them thrive is both inspiring and deeply rewarding, and it all started with the Hub’s teacher training programme! Sam Jennings Teacher of History, SHARE Multi-Academy Trust Bryonny Wrighton Teacher of English / Induction Tutor, SHARE Multi-Academy Trust My initial teacher training began with Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub in September 2022 and I gained my PGCE in June 2023. During my training, I completed placements at three secondary schools within SHARE Multi-Academy Trust. My first placement was at Thornhill Community Academy where the Humanities department were very supportive and I was able to develop positive relationships with staff and students, making my first placement valuable and enjoyable. In my second placement at Shelley College, I gained valuable experience of planning and teaching A-Level History. This was a fantastic opportunity to develop my love and passion for the subject. I began my final placement at Royds Hall Academy where I now work as a qualified teacher. I am continuing to develop my early career and practice, recently joining the Teaching and Learning team at Royds Hall. With the support of lead practitioners, we implement learning strategies and give examples of best practice for all staff briefings and CPD. It is a fantastic opportunity to develop my practice. I am very thankful to Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub and SHARE for their support during my initial training and my early career, their network of expertise and willingness to provide opportunities for all. 14 Training With Us: A Trainee’s Perspective
